Inscryption is a rooftop action and roguelike deck-building game designed by Daniel Mullins and published by Devolver Digital. It was released for Windows on October 19, year 2021. Inscryption was released for Linux and macOS on June 22, year 2022, and released for PlayStation 5 and 4 in August. The Nintendo Switch port was released in December year 2022. It received generally positive reviews and won several Game of the Year awards.
As a metafictional game, Inscryption involves found footage as the player follows the experiences of a vlogger who stumbles upon a video game called Inscryption, which contains many strange secrets. As the player interacts with the mysterious merchant in the dark room, they uncover more secrets that reveal the history of the legendary inscryption. The game is an illustration created by Daniel Mullins for the Ludum Dare game entitled “Sacrifices Must Be Made”. Initially, Mullins developed a card game where the sacrifice of playing cards became a central technique. After posting a prototype on itch.io and getting positive feedback, Mullins expanded the game, both expanding into card games and adding room-style escape routes. An official mod was released in March year 2022 that allowed players to play a version of the game that focused only on card games without other puzzles.
In the found footage of the game, vlogger Luke “The Lucky Carder” Carder films himself opening an unpublished card game pack called Inscryption. A card with a configuration written on it, is nearby, and there Carder finds a box with a floppy disk labeled Inscryption. After preparing his computer to run, he found that he could not start “New Game” and was forced to start in “Continue Game” state. In the game, the player character Carder interacts with a dark merchant and an enemy named Leshy in the room. When Carder’s character loses, Leshy uses a magical camera to capture the character with a new “death card” that appears in other games.
