Cyberpunk 2077 video game is a Year 2020 role playing action video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt. Set in Night City, an open world set in the Cyberpunk universe, players take on the role of a reformed mercenary known as V, who can learn skills and equipment as well as options for melee and visual combat. The main story follows V’s struggles as he deals with a mysterious cybernetic implant that threatens to rewrite his body with the personality and memories of a dead celebrity only V has seen; the two must work together to separate and save V’s life.
The development of the game began after the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine (2016). The game was developed by a team of Five hundred people using the REDengine 4 game engine. CD Projekt launched a new division in Wrocław, Poland and was assisted by Digital Scapes,QLOC and Jali Research in the production. Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith served as a consultant, and actor Keanu Reeves had a musical role. Marcin Przybyłowicz made his first score, with contributions from many talented artists.
After years of waiting, CD Projekt released Cyberpunk 2077 for PlayStation 4, Stadia, Windows, and Xbox One on December 10, Year 2020, followed by Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 on February 15, Year 2022. It received critical acclaim for its narrative graphics and setting, although some of its gameplay elements received mixed response, while its themes and portrayal of transgender characters received some criticism. It was also heavily criticized for bugs, particularly in the console versions, which suffered from performance issues; Sony removed it from the PlayStation Store from December Year 2020 to June Year 2021, while CD Projekt fixed some issues. CD Projekt became the subject of investigations and class action lawsuits for its apparent attempts to downplay the severity of the technical problems prior to release; these were eventually settled in a US$1.85 million settlement. As of April 2022, the game had sold over 18M copies. An expansion, Phantom Liberty, will be released in Year 2023 for PC and the 9th generation of video game consoles.
