Horizon Zero Dawn is a Year 2017 action adventure virtual Guerrilla game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The plot follows Aloy, a young hunter in a world full of machines, who makes an appearance in the past. The player uses various weapons, spears and stealth to fight against the creatures and enemy soldiers. The skill tree gives the player new abilities and money. The player can explore the open world to discover situations and do side quests. It is the first game in the Horizon series and was released for PlayStation 4 in Year 2017 and Windows in Year 2020. The game is the 1st action adventure Guerrilla game since Year 2004’s Killzone and the 1st video game to do so. Development began in Year 2011 after the completion of Killzone 3, with director Mathijs de Jonge considering it the most dangerous idea floating around at the time. The game engine, Decima was developed for Killzone: Shadow Fall and modified for Horizon Zero Dawn (HZD). Set in a post apocalypse scenario, anthropologists are contacted to find out what has been wrong with the world for over a thousand years. The soundtrack was directed by composer Joris de Man, with contributions from The Flight.
The game is a 3rd person action game. Players control Aloy, a hunter who ventures into the land to follow the life cycle of robotic creatures. Aloy can kill enemies in different ways shooting them with arrows, using Tripcaster, setting traps like tripwires using explosives and spears.
The game received critical acclaim for its open world, visuals, story, combat, characterization and actress Ashly Burch’s performance; However, the dialogue, hand-to-hand combat, and character style received some criticism. The game has won numerous awards and sold over 20 million units as of February Year 2022, making it one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games. The expansion, The Frozen Wilds, was released in November Year 2017. The series, Horizon Forbidden West, was released for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on February 18, Year 2022. The TV series opens on Netflix.
