About Control

Control is an action game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by 505 Games. The game was released in August 2019 for Windows, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in February 2021. Cloud-based versions were released for Nintendo Switch and Amazon Luna in October 2020, followed by versions for Stadia in July 2021. Two paid expansions were released.

The game revolves around the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a secret agency of the US government that is responsible for possessing and studying material that violates the law of truth. As Jesse Faden (Courtney Hope), the new director of the agency, the player explores the oldest building – the paranormal headquarters of the FBC – and uses powerful abilities to defeat a deadly enemy known as Hiss, who attacked and destroyed the truth. The player gains power by finding Power Objects, odd objects such as rotary phones or floppy disks with other powers, which are in the middle of the odd points and have been acquired by the FBC him. In addition to Hope, vocal work on live performances is provided by James McCaffrey, Matthew Porretta and Martti Suosalo, while the group Poets of the fall provided additional music.

Control is motivated by negative news about the SCP Foundation’s fictional collaborative online wiki, based on the new version. The oldest building environment was modeled after the architectural style of many government buildings built during the Cold War, which served as a base to demonstrate the game’s destructive environmental systems. The core game includes many references to Alan Wake, one of Remedy’s previous games with a similar paranormal theme, and the AWE expansion of Control is a crossover between the two series, which Remedy says is part of of the world associated with Remedy. Control is one of the first games to take advantage of direct ray tracing built into the hardware of new video cards.
