The 2020 FIA Formula 1 Championship is a racing competition for Formula 1 cars that is the 71st edition of the 1st International Championship. The governing body of international motorsport, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), has recognized the competition as the highest class of competition for open wheel racing cars. Drivers and teams compete for the World Drivers’ Championship and World Manufacturers’ Championship titles, respectively. The tournament was originally scheduled to begin in March, but the start was postponed to July in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than a record 22 Grands Prix were contested this season, but as some races were canceled and new races were added to replace them, a total of 17 races were contested. The season started in month July with the Austrian Grand Prix (AGP) and ended in December with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (ADGP). Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the 1st 8 rounds of the competition were held behind closed doors, while other races took place with reduced capacity or behind closed doors due to the second limit of the COVID 19 disease.
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes entered the season as the world’s leading drivers and constructors respectively, with both winning their sixth championships in Year 2019. At the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Mercedes won their seventh consecutive constructors’ championship, making them the only team to win seven consecutive championships, breaking Ferrari’s record from Year 1999 to Year 2004. Mercedes also did to have the distinction of being the only team to win the tournament. since Year 2014 turbo-hybrid command engine changes were made. Hamilton equaled Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world drivers’ championships at the Turkish Grand Prix and broke Schumacher’s previous record of 91 career wins at the Portuguese Grand Prix.
Throughout the season, 4 drivers drive as a test driver or 3rd driver in the free event period. Roy Nissany and Jack Aitken drove for Williams in 1 and 3 Grands Prix, Robert Kubica drove for Alfa Romeo Racing in 5 Grands Prix and Mick Schumacher drove for Haas in 1 Grand Prix.
