Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers is the 3rd expansion pack for Final Fantasy XIV, a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and PlayStation 4. It was released in January 2nd of July. , 2019, two years after Stormblood. As before, Naoki Yoshida served as director and producer, and Masayoshi Soken composed the soundtrack. It was released as a standalone product for current players; for new players, the “Complete Edition”, originally released with Heavensward, has been updated to include all available expansions.

Shadowbringers takes place in the First, a parallel dimension on the verge of collapse, where the player character is called upon to save and restore the world. Several companions trapped there accidentally join them, as does Emet-Selch, an immortal villain who seeks to take advantage of the Prime’s apocalypse to restore his godhood, the Zodiark. Emet-Selch accompanies and tests the player’s character, confident despite his interference. In addition to adding new areas, the expansion pack increased the level cap, introduced two playable character classes and two races, and introduced the ability to explore dungeons with non-playable “Trusted” companions.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers has received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences, particularly for its writing and attention to player accessibility. In December Year 2019, Square Enix announced that the title had reached a cumulative total of 18M player accounts. As with its major, predecessors content patches were scheduled every three months. These updates expanded the main story, added new features, and debuted side stories, including a crossover written by Yoko Taro that features characters and elements from Nier: Automata and the Restoration of Ishgard, a long-term campaign to rebuild the beleaguered nation after the war Dragon Song War. The release of the third core content patch has been delayed by two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
