Nintendo Switch Sports is a simulation sports game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Sports is the final entry in the Wii Sports series and the 4th game in the Wii Sports sub-series, and the 1st to replace the “Wii” name. Nintendo Switch Sports game was released on April 29, year 2022, and received generally mixed reviews from critics. Nintendo Switch Sports has sold over 4.8M units as of June 30, year 2022, making it one of the best-selling games of Nintendo Switch. This game takes place in a multi-sport arena named Spocco Square, which contains 3 games from previous events (Tennis and Bowling from Wii Sports and Swordplay from Wii Sports Resort; called the latter as an in-game game), and 3 new sports (volleyball, football and badminton). Another sport from the previous event, golf, was also announced and released in a free update on November 29, year 2022. Alongside Miis, new avatars called “Sportsmates” were introduced, with detailed hair and face as well as arms and legs. In addition, the ring fit equipment introduced in Ring Fit Adventure is included in the game and can be used in football. Initially, the leg strap only works for Shootout mode. Since the summer update in July year 2022, the ankle strap can now be used for all types of football. Takayuki Shimamura, who directed the entire series of Wii games, returned to the project as a producer, Yoshikazu Yamashita, who directed Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, returned as a director. The project began shortly after the release of the Nintendo Switch console. Yoshiaki Koizumi, Executive Vice President, Deputy General Manager of Nintendo EPD and General Designer of Nintendo Switch, called Yamashita and asked about the development of Nintendo Switch titles and Wii game series. According to Yamashita, 90% of the development team was new people who weren’t part of the original titles in the Wii series.
