Ghostwire: Tokyo is an adventure action game from a 1st person perspective. The player can use various psychic and paranormal abilities to defeat the spirits and ghosts haunting Tokyo. Combat director Shinichiro Hara described the fight as “karate meets magic”, as the athlete uses Kuji-kiri hand movements to perform magic. When an enemy loses most of their health, their heads are exposed and the player can destroy them with a takedown move, by defeating these spirits and collecting Yokai, the character will collect spirit points and equipment used to enhance their abilities.
Ghostwire: Tokyo game begins with a ghost (Kazuhiko Inoue) passing through the scene of a traffic accident. The spirit searches for the body it has and chooses a man named Akito (Kensuke Nishi) who died in the accident. Akito wakes up, still in control of his body except for his right hand, which is controlled. Not long after that, a terrible atmosphere enters, turning everyone caught in it into a ghost, but Akito escapes it thanks to the spirit possessing him. A man wearing the mask of Hannya (known only as Hanya (Shunsuke Sakuya)) appears in a digital signal near the area and uses defeat to summon evil people, sealing the spirits of ordinary people in the house Shibuya soup. The ghost tells Akito that he needs to chase Hannya to stop him, but Akito convinces the ghost to go see his sister Mari (Asami Seto), who is sleeping in a local hospital.
The spirit gives Akito spiritual powers to help him fight in Mari’s room, but he realizes that Hanya defeated them there and wants to use Mari for some rituals. When Akito tries to intervene, Hanya stabs him in the chest and chasing Mari. As he is dying, Akito has a flashback, showing that Mari is in shock due to the fire.
