Star Wars: Squadrons is a space combat fight game, played from a 1st person perspective. Players take control of star fighters from the Galactic Empire or the New Republic navy. In these ships, they can use energy movement between the engine, shields and weapons functions to defeat their opponents in fight. Imperial star fighters lack shields, resulting in other additions to their class so that the 2 teams are evenly balanced. As players gain more experience, they can unlock new shields, weapons, upgrades, and various cosmetic items for the pilot and his ship. Completing day by day Challenges and Operations Challenges will also grant players Glory, which can be spent on purchasing cosmetic unlocks. Players can check the ship’s shields, energy and status by viewing the instruments in the cockpit ship’s .
Star Wars: Squadrons game is class-based, with the New Republic and Empire having four star fighter classes for the player to choose from: X-Wing for the Republic), Fighter (TIE Fighter for the Empire, Interceptor (TIE Interceptor and A-Wing), Bomber (TIE Bomber and Y-Wing), and Support (TIE Reaper and U-Wing). An update added the B-Wing to the bomber class for the New Republic and the TIE Defender to the Galactic Empire’s fighter class. The game features two multiplayer modes and one single player mode: the story mode is set after the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the second Death Star. The narrative alternates between 2 customizable pilots from the New Republic’s Vanguard Squad and the Empire’s Titan Squad. Star Wars: Squadrons game features 2 online modes: Dog fight, a team death match mode that supports Fleet Battles and 10 players, where 2 teams of up to 5 players compete to destroy each other’s capital ships.
Initially pitched and conceived by Patrick Lalonde and James Clement to leadership of Motive Studio, they both were soon joined by Steven Masters to help develop the presentation for what would become Star Wars: Squadrons. As these 3 developers were still finalizing the single player campaign for Star Wars Battlefront 2, a small group led by Ian Frazier laid the groundwork to build the production team.
